The San Roque – Rutherford Park area – bounded by Ontare Road, Foothill Road, Alamar Avenue, and State Street – is one of Santa Barbara’s choicest neighborhoods. It is located northwest of downtown Santa Barbara. If you take the Las Positas exit from Highway 101 and head towards the mountains, you’ll dead-end right into it.
Admired for its architecture, San Roque property is highly sought after. You’ll find everything from Spanish Colonial and English Tudor to French Normandy and American Colonial along the neighborhood’s tree-lined streets. The homes are undeniably beautiful. Unique. Charming.
The San Roque Canyon has a rich history. The soil here has been traversed by noteworthy explorers and settlers alike. 80 years ago the Great Depression prevented expansionists from building a country club. Instead, it became a residential area where today many families choose to raise their children.
Several schools and parks pepper the area, creating a safe environment for children to learn and play. Peabody School and San Roque School are nearby, allowing children to walk to school in a safe and timely manner. Stevens, Willowglen, and San Roque Parks all provide ample opportunity for child-like fun. Or a pleasant nap.
Shrouded in trees, the streets are always shaded, but the temperature is always at least five degrees warmer than coastal neighborhoods due to its inland location.
With the Five Points Shopping Center and Loreto Plaza as their backyard, residents don’t have to travel far for necessities. Several fine dining establishments and banking facilities are also available.
The San Roque neighborhood is not only a peaceful place to visit, but a peaceful place to stay.
